This design was created as an assignment for the university, which involved choosing and developing a self-initiated project. I wanted to explore how design connects with personal nostalgia and trends, so I decided to create an album cover for a cassette. Cassettes are a reminder of my teenage years and, in today's digital era, may seem outdated, especially to younger generations. However, after researching, I discovered cassettes are experiencing renewed interest, partly due to influences like the TV series Stranger Things, which has made them popular again, especially among Gen Z. My motivation was to bridge this personal resonance with a contemporary cultural phenomenon.
I also surveyed the Facebook group Raving 90ies LV and received positive feedback; people found the project engaging and shared valuable insights on cassettes.
Initially, I made a playlist of music for the cassette, which became a House, Techno, and Ambient compilation. My research and experience suggest people usually listen to these genres on vinyl, but I enjoyed this experiment.
For the design, I explored many ideas. Following my tutor’s advice, I used analogue tools like paint and textures, scanned them, and experimented further in Photoshop. Here, I share two designs that received the most positive feedback. I also added a little Leaflet to give the cassette a more tangible feel and connection with the audience.
